This Preparatory Course is intended if you do not have the required entry qualification to pursue a degree programme in nursing. The aim is to equip you with the key skills that would secure admission to, and additionally prepare you for successful engagement in the undergraduate degree in nurse education. You will be eligible to be admitted to the Preparatory Course for the Nursing area of study if you are in possession of the requirements for admission as outlined in the Admission and Progression Requirements section. As a successful candidate, you will follow the programme of study for the Preparatory Course as directed by the Board of Studies. The main objectives are to teach you academic skills, nursing as a profession and basic biomedical sciences. You will then be able to successfully complete the course and start your path for a nursing profession.

Applicants are required to be in possession of one of the following:

passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination at Level 3 or Grade 5 or better in six subjects, including: Maltese, English Language and Mathematics or
a Diploma awarded by an institution other than the University of Malta pegged at MQF/EQF Level 4 comprising not less than 120 ECTS/ECVET credits.

An applicant who is a graduate of a University or has other qualifications considered to be sufficient may be exempted by the Admissions Board from any of the subjects in which a pass is required for admission to the Course.

Applicants are further required to be aged not less than 18 years within three months following the date on which the Preparatory Course commences.

Applicants not in possession of the Special Course Requirements and considered under the Adult Learners clause shall be required to sit for and pass an interview. In preparation for the interview, applicants shall be required to submit a letter, written in English, giving their motivation for applying for the Course (following guidelines provided by the Department). Applicants shall also be required to submit an updated Curriculum Vitae.

During the first semester of the Preparatory Course, accepted applicants are also required to undergo an occupational health assessment, so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) - B.Sc. (Hons) - under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

By the end of the course, you will be:

Equipped with academic skills that are consistent with degree level education.

Introduced to the nature and core elements of the nursing profession and the practice of being a qualified nurse.

Enabled to equip yourself with the required basic knowledge in the biomedical sciences.

Engage in degree level education in a satisfactory manner.

Develop an understanding of the role and contribution of the nurse in modern health and social care systems.

Better understand the pathophysiology of disease and its management, as taught in the Degree programme in Nursing.
